I thought I’d take a break from all the Remodel posts to talk about BEER of all things! Crazy, right?!
For those that are unaware, the first Saturday in May (May 2nd) marks National Homebrew Day. Each year thousands of homebrewers celebrate the day by doing a Big Brew and brewing a batch of beer together. In the spirit of social distancing, this year the AHA (American Homebrewers Association) is throwing a “Virtual Big Brew” as homebrewers are unable to meet in person.
It’s easy to take for granted the world’s most rewarding hobby now, but the fact remains it was illegal until 1979. I don’t know where I’d be had generations of aspiring zymurgists not lobbied and petitioned the U.S. Government to take such an antiquated law off of the books. I can tell you one thing- I would not be opening a brewery. You never know if you have a passion for something until you try it. Any homebrewer will tell you it takes a few “drain pours” to learn something about how to make great beer.
This year for my part, I look to continue the tradition as I brew virtually alongside my fellow Keepers of Craft homebrewers. Have an old brew kettle collecting dust in the garage? I encourage you to fire it up and raise a glass to the tireless efforts of those who fought for our homebrewing freedom.
Need some inspiration?
AHA has posted some suggested recipes. I plan to make a variation of the appropriately named Quarantine IPA using some of my hops I harvested last year. Be safe and stay well.
Cheers!
